What
is thin-client server-based technology?
Imagine if you will, a
server loaded once with all of your business-critical applications. Users across your
network or connected remotely can access the applications freely. New or old PC's,
Macintosh's, Unix and other network terminals can all access the system using virtually
any protocol. All activity, installations and upgrades are controlled from a central
point. Seems like a dream? Well it's not. The reality is Citrix's thin-client multi-user
technology. Citrix solutions provide access to virtually any application, across any type
of network connection to any type of client with minimal bandwidth requirements. All of
the real activity occurs on the server.
Why do
companies want to employ thin-client technology?
- Rapid
application deployment -With Citrix MetaFrame, all applications are
installed on the server and become accessible to any user. Behind the scenes, Citrix's
proprietary multi-user logic creates the files and registry settings required making the
application user unique. No desktop or network installation necessary for virtually
instant access!
- Robust remote access solution -Because thin-client technology by
definition requires minimal bandwidth, remote access is now a pleasure. Even with a 28.8
modem, a user is likely to see connection speeds that rival in-house LAN connections. For
users on the LAN, Citrix can often be faster than ordinary 10-base-T desktop connections.
You'll have to fight those users off!
- Reduced cost of ownership - Consider this. Citrix products will work
just fine on your legacy equipment. That means those slow 486's (even 386's) can be
used as Citrix terminals. Once the client makes a connection, the user is running on the
server at Pentium speeds. In addition, the only configuration required at the desktop is
the installation of the small, rapidly configured Citrix client. Applications are
installed only once, at the server. Changes made are made once, at the server. No more
unending visits to the desktop. And a host of administrative tools make the on-line help
desk a reality.
- Centralized management of applications and support - There are also additional benefits to be accrued:
automatic printer replication, centralized standardization and management, server load
balancing, terminal usage and robust security.
